Things got a bit skewed towards the end of the month, but here's my August total:

How'd you guys do? :)

It's half-way through August, so I thought I'd make a progress update. :) This month I've been working on not one, but THREE separate projects - my attention is firmly focused on one now, and I think it'll stay that way until I finish it. Well, I hope so, anyway.

Hope those of you who're participating are still excited and productive. :)

Okay, so we're two days into another Month of Madness. I'm going to set a 25K goal for my Suppression novel(la).

What are you guys working on? :D

And so it begins... Again...?

... Any takers on attempting another monthofmadness in August? I know it's tomorrow and we've not really had any build up but... It's as good a month as any to give it another go!

Doesn't have to be original fic if you're feeling more fanfic-focused, and it could be the perfect opportunity to add a nice chunk of words to that wip you're just dying to get finished... *bats eyelashes as much as possible*

I'm going to be attempting it once I've settled on a project if for no other reason than I could use it as a means of distraction and would be v. happy to have as many peeps as possible along for the ride.

Wellll... June truly was a mad month for me, due to personal circumstances, so I kinda didn't reach the goal I'd hoped for. Next time I'll hopefully be more successful!

I'm thinking I'll have another go in August, if anyone would like to join me. :)

Ready to GOOOO!

I'm all ready to go with the June madness!

I will be continuing the original novel I started last year. I worked on it a tiny bit in March (didn't hit anywhere near the word count I wanted), and I've written a lot more in May. My starting word count is 44,292.

I'm going to aim for the full 50,000 words, although I'll be happy with 40-45k. I know this would take my total to over the recommended length for a first novel (80k approx), but it's my first draft and I figure it's going to end up long no matter what.

Good luck to all who plan to participate! ^__^

Happy June, everyone! If you're taking part in Month of Madness, what's your goal for the month?

I'm going to be hopping from one fic to the other - one original erotica novella and the novel I was working on in March. I'm about 8,000 words into the first one, and 55,000 into the other.

I'm aiming to finish the erotica one (it'll end up about 15K, I think) and get a fair amount of work done on the novel. Doubt I'll finish the first draft, but we'll see. :)

Good luck with your projects if you're participating - sorry for the spammage if you're not!

Getting Prepared

Soooo I'm all excited about the ol' novel right now, I've been getting stuck back in and have written 5k in the last few days. With the next proposed Month of Madness starting in a few days, so I thought I'd share some stuff I've found helpful with those of you who are taking part. :)

- I can't remember if I mentioned it last time around, but Stephen King's book 'On Writing' is awesome and both chirugal and I found it helpful, entertaining and inspiring when we read it last year. It's more of a memoir than a 'guidebook', but it still has frank and refreshing advice on the writing process.

- The community oc_meme_central has an absolute TON of interesting character memes. Some are a bit lightweight and just for fun, but there are some really good in-depth ones that can help to pad out your characters' profiles. I found this one good: oc-meme-central.livejournal.com/6813.html#cutid1 It looks at things like the character's past, their motivations, different aspects of their behaviour etc and not just fluff like 'favourite ice cream flavour'. I found it pretty helpful for identifying the under-developed aspects of my central characters.

- One of the things I find most exasperating about writing is having to stop and come up with new character names all the time. I'm constantly having to do this, even though it's usually for peripheral or very minor characters (e.g. murder victims, their relatives, colleagues of the main characters). However minor the character, I always want their names to sound believable, authentic and different enough from the others that I won't confuse anyone reading it. Plus names are a good way for me to convey the mulit-culturalism in my fictional US city without labouring the point. Anyway, I've found the following sites really helpful:
http://names.mongabay.com/most_common_surnames.htm
http://www.20000-names.com
http://baby-names.familyeducation.com

I'm determined to have a proper go at using Write or Die this time around! I know most of the past MOM participants are familiar with it already. I could really do with learning to write faster and this seems to be the best way of doing it.

And so it ends...

... Okay, so technically, it ended on Thursday. I'm just bad at remembering to post!

So... how did everyone do?

I managed just over 76k, then promptly lost just over 6k when the copy I had became corrupted - thankfully, there was an older copy in an email back up or I'd have lost the whole thing. Should be finished in another 10-15k but seem to have lost my motivation since March ended! Oops!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the month and got something to take away from the experience - and I hope that if we ever decide to do this again, you'll all be around then, too!
